During the years of the economic miracle, there was the “miracle of the bathroom”. According to the slogan “radiant shine and cleanliness deep into the pores”, a bathroom was a mandatory part of the equipment everywhere, in single-family houses or in settlement projects. Furthermore, the urban planners of the time found it ideal to have a mix of dense living and free time activities. Wolfsburg-Westhagen, a satellite town built in the 1960s for 15 000 inhabitants in 4 300 units, corresponds exactly to this ideal.
Lucie Mercadal, born in France in 1987, followed the traces of the “miracle of the bathroom” in this estate of Wolfsburg in a video performance in 2015. The coffee table, set on a slightly swaying resopal tabletop, is a metaphor for the acclaimed domesticity. Mercadal speaks calmly and with an almost naïve-sounding voice about the ideals of the beginning, about beauty and the expectations of life. Meanwhile, the camera shows slow and slightly shaking sequences of today’s reality in Westhagen: satellite dishes, empty playgrounds, grey and weathered house fronts made of exposed aggregate concrete. In many places, satellite towns have mutated into declining urban areas, the miracle has turned into a totally daily experience.
Mercadal’s work is affecting, because it employs the same sophisticated simplicity and clarity that she also showed in the video “L’histoire de Joseph et Anna” in 2013. In an unusual and poetic way, she tells the love story of her great-grandparents, which outlasted the different periods of the first half of the 20th century. Questions concerning origin and identity are interrelated with backgrounds of crucial decisions. The temporary performance in a park, which is obviously perceived as a film production thanks to the video camera, keeps passersby away and works with this situation as if it was happening on stage; it does not wait for coincidence, but will accept it. The performative situation is the basis of the video.
In contrast to former actions, where her own body and her own self as well as temporary perception, the interaction of production and reception in the here-and-now were decisive, today Mercadal works more with the transformation of “the own self” into a figure, she employs more distances, allows repetitions, operates with art-historical references and with analogies of paintings. In her work, the video has become a form of art and is no longer just the medium allowing the documentation of a performance. It is obsolete to separate the categories of video and performance – the focus lies on the interface of these two elements.
The voice and language play another important role. Whilst former performances played with sounds, melodies and singing, the partly simple and provocative narration becomes now more and more crucial. The narration, told with the sound of a chronicler, addresses the subjects of longing, love, erotic, romantic, origin, ways of life and identity. At the same time, the fairytale-like narration, the graceful and cheerful voice as well as the play with repetitions create a level of fiction. “Huge” topics join up with lightness, documentary and fictional approaches mix and celebrate silently the synthesis of formal severity and romantic.
